Roofs Of The Past!

Historic roofing materials, such as thatch, slate or clay, were a favoured choice in the past, due to their natural availability. Thatch roofing used materials that we link to old properties, due to the material growing anywhere and easier to find. However, it had issues due to being flammable and easily damaged. An example of this being the Great Fire of London (1666), with the thatch roofs spreading the fire quickly. This is one of the reasons why clay roofing became more popular, due to thatch being banned. These days thatch roofing is pricey to keep. Unfortunately, even though clay was a stronger choice, it had issues of its own. It would tend to warp after being fired, causing their fitting to be crooked and susceptible to leaking. Slate was also another option, but due to the heavy material and uneven shape, gaps could appear in the roof, making the waterproof material void. These days, concrete is a highly favoured material, although they are a heavy choice and not the most aesthetically pleasing. Natural materials are starting to get popular again, but cons and pros need to be thought about, such as weather vulnerability and how robust they are. Safety should be a priority when it comes to choosing the right material. Call Thomas Roofing for all roof repairs in North London.
